In our last post, I gave you a sneak peek into the Need Good Love model, a memorable success formula designed to help you align your career and unlock your full potential. If you’ve ever felt burned out or stuck in a job that just doesn’t seem to fit, you’re not alone. But as I shared, career alignment can be the key to transforming that frustration into fulfillment.

What is the Need Good Love Model?

As we discussed in the previous article, the Need Good Love model helps you identify the sweet spot where your career aligns with your needs, strengths, and passions. I first developed this approach while coaching a client who, despite being outwardly successful, felt trapped in his job. Through our work together, I realized that the perfect job lies at the intersection of three key components—and aligning these is crucial for career fulfillment:

  • Need: It’s more than salary and benefits; it includes autonomy, job security, and growth opportunities.

  • Good: Your strengths—when your job taps into these, you feel confident and capable.

  • Love: Your passion—this is the energy source that makes work more than just a paycheck.

The Power of Alignment in Career Fulfillment

Alignment is about more than just making a job work; it’s about making it thrive. Think of it like tuning an instrument—when all the strings are in harmony, the music flows effortlessly. The Need Good Love model is your tuning guide to finding that harmony in your career.

Align Your Career with the Need Good Love Sweet Spot

When your job aligns with your Need, Good, and Love, everything changes. You’re no longer just getting through the workday—you’re thriving. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Need + Good, but no Love: You’re good at your job, and it pays well, but without passion, it feels like a grind.

  • Good + Love, but no Need: You’re passionate and skilled, but if your job doesn’t meet your financial needs or provide balance, it’s unsustainable.

  • Need + Love, but no Good: You love what you do, and it meets your needs, but struggling with your strengths leads to frustration.

An Example: The Power of Alignment

Take a look at a client I worked with—an incredibly skilled CFO at a global company. She had the title, the salary, and everything that seemed like success on the surface. But beneath that, she didn’t enjoy finance. What truly energized her was building her team and improving systems. Once we uncovered that, she transitioned to a shared services role that better aligned with her strengths and passions. It wasn’t about the title or the money anymore—it was about finding alignment. And that made all the difference.

How to Align with Your Own Career Sweet Spot

To find your sweet spot, ask yourself:

  • Are your financial and practical needs being met?

  • Are you using your strengths and skills effectively?

  • Do you love what you do?

It’s not enough to simply identify what you need, are good at, or love. Often, mental models hold us back from making the necessary changes. For example, one client knew exactly what she needed but was afraid to assert her needs. Another client understood his strengths but didn’t want to "toot his own horn." And yet another loved certain tasks but believed that work was supposed to be hard, so he discounted the idea that others could genuinely enjoy their jobs. Our coaches have helped clients navigate these challenges, showing them how to shift their mindset and embrace opportunities for change.

The Need Good Love model is more than a career tool—it’s a guide to discovering work that truly matters.
